Italian crime drama Gomorrah will be over for good after series five reaches its conclusion. The HBO Max and Sky series has been a hit since premiering in 2014, having been based on the books of the same name by author Roberto Saviano. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming final season.

Why is Gomorrah ending after season 5?

Season four reached an epic conclusion when it came out in May 2019.

But since then, fans have had to wait longer than usual for the new series to begin because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The filming delays meant viewers weren’t sure when Gommorah would return.

While a release date hasn’t come out yet, season five is expected to premiere later this year.

Filming has reportedly already finished on the new series of Gomorrah.

Shooting for the new lot of episodes finished in May with the final scenes being filmed in Latvia and Italy.

So with the crew working hard on post-production, it does seem likely the series will premiere before the end of the year.

An exact reason as to why Gomorrah has been cancelled hasn’t been given.

The creators behind Gomorrah haven’t given any specifics in terms of why it is coming to a close now.

However, there is an indication that its production company Cattleya felt that this was the right time to end the story.

Speaking to Deadline, Cattleya President Riccardo Tozzi said: “I think it will be great. Each time, we’ve tried to do something different.

“We’ve found another special angle for season five. It’s crepuscular, dark and emotional.”

“At the moment, we feel like this is the last season.

“You never know. But at the moment, we think of it as the last season.”

So while the end might be near, this doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be a future for Gomorrah.

Gomorrah is an Italian cross between the classic The Godfather and The Sopranos.

The series delves into the violent feuds between rival mafia families in southern Italy.

Marco D’Amore, who plays iconic character Ciro Di Marzio, not only starred but directed the first five episodes, along with series regular Claudio Cupellini.

As with the previous series, season five is expected to be made up of 10 episodes.

There is no trailer yet to speak of but this should come out a bit nearer to the time of its premiere.

But how will the story end for the mafia clans in the gripping Italian drama?

Gomorrah is available to watch on HBO Max and Sky.
