With the Flux saga of Doctor Who ending in December 2021, the internet has been ablaze with fan theories and potential candidates. As the long-running BBC show approaches its 60th birthday, many former cast members are dusting off their time travelling boots to step back on set – reportedly including none other than David Tennant.

Jodie has impressed viewers for the last three seasons, defending the timeline from danger since 2017.

The show’s creatives have kept their lips sealed on who the next Doctor will be, with many household names reportedly in the mix.

Whovians can rejoice as 2023 is set to be a galactic success for the show as it has its anniversary.

It has been reported that: “The BBC wanted something unique to mark six decades of Doctor Who.”

Supposedly David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston and Peter Capaldi will be returning for the TARDIS birthday bash season.

A source has told The Sun: “And while getting all the former Time Lords together will be a challenge, it’s one Russell [T Davies] might just achieve.

“After all, he was the man responsible for signing up Christopher and David back in 2005, and he is one of the few people who might convince them to be a part of the show again.

“It remains to be seen if he can achieve an exact copy of The Five Doctors, but he will certainly want to capture some of the spirit of that landmark episode in these specials.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Doctor Who representatives for comment.

Davies is a Welsh screenwriter and television producer who has worked on and off with Doctor and was also the driving force behind hit shows such as Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, and Casanova.

He was the head writer and executive producer on Doctor Who with the rebooted season one in 2005 up until season four in 2010 before rejoining the franchise in 2020.

Not only that he was also the creator and executive producer of the spin-off series Torchwood.

Davies’ most recent success comes in the form of the award-winning Channel 4 series It’s A Sin.

Another interesting link between the Channel 4 hit is that several of its cast members have made headlines about them taking over the lead role in the BBC sci-fi show.

Years and Years singer Olly Alexander played Ritchie Tozer in It’s A Sin and has been linked several times to the production.

Another contender is British-Egyptian actor Fady Elsayed has also been flagged by entertainment specialist Richard Arnold when he was told the show might be looking for a more “hunky” lead.

Tennant, the 10th Doctor, is a firm favourite to return and hold the title once again.

Although some actors have returned to the show as different characters, no one has helmed the TARDIS twice.

It is highly possible as a Time Lord could regenerate to look like anything or anyone, so what’s not to say that a familiar face can’t return?

Doctor Who: Flux is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
