Disney Signs Deal With Colin Kaepernick For New Content About Social Justice

Disney has entered into an overall “first-look” deal with Colin Kaepernick and his production company Ra Vision Media for new scripted and unscripted content focused around race and social justice.

In a statement, Disney said it is looking to produce new content with Kaepernick to showcase work of Black and Brown directors and producers. Whatever form the new content takes, it will appear on Disney’s network of platforms, including ESPN, Hulu, Pixar, and The Undefeated, which is ESPN’s website dedicated to the intersection of sports and culture.

“During this unprecedented time, The Walt Disney Company remains committed to creating diverse and inclusive content that resonates and matters,” Disney chairman and former CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. “Colin’s experience gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture and race, which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration.”

Debuting first is a new TV series about Kaepernick’s life and journey in the world of football and politics. This seems to be separate from the other docuseries about Kaepernick from Ava DuVernay that’s coming to Netflix.

Kaepernick is the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. In 2016, he protested police violence by kneeling for the national anthem before every game that season, inspiring a wider protest movement. Kaepernick received widespread backlash, and Donald Trump called for him to be “fired.”
