Coronation Street airs twist as shock character blamed for factory roof collapse

Coronation Street fans were stunned as a former character was blamed for the factory roof collapse and Rana Habeeb’s death in a surprise twist.

One character plotted to pin the manslaughter of Rana on villain Pat Phelan, as they feared they would be blamed for the shocking accident.

Evil Phelan died on the soap last year, but that hasn’t stopped him potentially causing havoc on the Street from beyond the grave.

Viewers of the ITV soap know Carla Connor was aware there was serious damage to her factory roof that was dangerous.

Gary Windass asked her to let him fix it but, short of cash, only let him fix part of the roof, just weeks before the collapse.

In the wake of the collapse, after an unknown culprit caused further damage to the ceiling, a guilty Carla was ready to tell the police the truth.

But on/off lover Peter Barlow decided to take matters into his own hands to protect her, telling Gary he would also go to prison if he revealed all.

He instead asked him to lie for Carla, threatening his own chances of being linked to the crime.

Peter piled the pressure on Gary to stay quiet, asking him to pretend his conversation with Carla never happened.

Few people know that Gary had recently told Carla the roof needed fixing, so Peter came up with a shocking plan.

With Phelan originally owning the building company, he had completed works on the factory last year before the recent damage.

But Peter decided that they should claim the roof hadn’t been touched since then, implicating a dead Phelan for the crime and suggesting he hadn’t done it properly.

While it’s not known if they will pull off the plan, viewers were stunned to see how far the suspects were prepared to go to save themselves.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
