Dan Walker's last day with the BBC Breakfast was a tear-free zone until his pal and former co-star Louise Minchin turned up, and she appeared to get emotional.

Man of the hour Dan also seemed to be blinking back his emotions as a number of tear-jerk surprises were unveiled in a beautiful montage, before Louise turned up in a fabulous yellow jumpsuit.

Louise had to stop herself at one point during the tribute as she wiped away tears while crediting her ex-co-star Dan as she spoke about the laughter they'd had.

The duo shared a warm hug as she arrived on set, with them admitting they were "breaking a rule of a lifetime" as they said they'd never actually touched while they'd presented together.

During his last ever episode, Dan's co-star Sally, 50, took to Twitter to tease that the Strictly Come Dancing star could be in store for a number of "surprises".

Sharing a final selfie with her partner in crime on his final day – along with three members of the production team, Sally penned: "End of an era. Join us on ⁦@BBCBreakfast with ⁦@mrdanwalker for the last time."

Sally also promised fans: "One or two surprises on the way."

The post was met with heaps of praise and well wishes from online followers, one person penned: "Thank you, Dan… for your brilliant newscasting over the years.

"Professional when needed to be and humorous where it was possible. A refreshing start to each morning in that first half of the week. Good luck with your future projects…most of all enjoy."

Another echoed: "@sallynugent, @BBCBreakfast and @mrdanwalker Will miss your partnership xx The laughter the tears and the fun you bring to the show."

While a third said: "Aw will miss you two together on the sofa. Good luck to @mrdanwalker with your new adventures."

It was touch-and-go if Dan would actually make it for his last day of filming after he suffered "a travel-based issue" on his drive to Manchester.

Dan told fans: "Thank you for all the gorgeous messages that you're sending through about my final shift on BBC Breakfast tomorrow.

"I'm looking forward to it – if I actually manage to get there.

"I'm currently at the services on the M40 charging the electric vehicle.

"I had a travel-based issue and need to get it up to a significant enough charge to get all the way to Manchester."

Due to setbacks with the electric car, Dan's sleep was due to impacted ahead heavily ahead of his big day.

He added: "I might get there very late tonight. I'm planning on about two and a half hours' sleep.

"So if I look a bit fuddled in the morning, that's the reason why."

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
