The third series of Channel 5 favourite All Creatures Great and Small wrapped up earlier this year following some emotional episodes. Viewers are keen to find out what will be in store in season four, but thankfully fans won’t need to wait until then for their next All Creatures fix, with the Christmas special set to air on Friday. Actor Samual detailed how Siegfried’s father was “very controlling” as he talked about his character’s future.
Based on the real-life stories of veterinary legend James Herriot, Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small has captivated audiences since the new series began in 2020.
The Yorkshire-based series is a hit with viewers who enjoy the escapism of the 1930s drama.
With Christmas fast approaching, the wait is almost over for fans to watch the special festive episode.
On his character, Samual remarked: “The interesting thing with Siegfried in series two when he became unstuck, is that he lied.
“He lied about something for the benefit of somebody that he sometimes grudgingly loves, and it didn’t work out.
“And that was an important lesson because he could see lying is quite straightforward.
“It’s one of the things I like most about him.
“So maybe there’s more of an honesty and a realisation that honesty is the best policy, even though you know, somebody who can be incredibly annoying.
“So yeah, I think that does probably put us on a level.”
Reflecting on his character’s background, he continued: “I mean, the real differences are how best to father.
“His father was quite controlling and left Siegfried with a style of looking after anything, which is quite authoritarian.
“So, he’s quite controlling. And Tristan Farnon (played by Callum Woodhouse) doesn’t like that.
“He’s not my son. And even if he were, at some point, you have to do the best for them so they can be the best they can be.
“If you love someone set them free. That’s my motto for Siegfried this year.”
Could the Christmas special and the upcoming fourth series see the two brothers delving into their past?
On the festive instalment, executive producer Melissa Gallant commented: “We are delighted to be offering the audience one more trip back to the sanctuary of Darrowby before the year is out.
“An All Creatures Christmas special always aims to deliver uplifting celebration alongside the often painful reality of Christmas for many, and this year’s episode is no exception.
“Set in December 1939, this is our first Christmas during wartime and we wanted to reflect something of the reality of war for our Skeldale family.
“Ben Vanstone cooks up his signature Christmas feast full of fun, festivity, community, romance, Father Christmas, tears, and of course a resurgence of Mrs Hall’s (Anna Madeley) excellent sausage rolls.
“We have all laughed and cried – a lot – making it and hope it will bring a little necessary joy and catharsis to the end of a challenging year for many.”
All Creatures Great and Small Christmas Special air on Friday at 9pm on Channel 5.
