First look at London Stansted’s £600million transformation

London Stansted airport is undergoing a huge £160million transformation and now holidaymakers have been given a sneak peek of what’s planned.

The airport has unveiled a fly-by video which reveals just what changes are coming, alongside CGI renderings of what passengers can expect to see when they head to both the departures and arrival lounges.

It looks like it could make for quite a seamless journey thanks to features such as larger areas for security queues, as well as an impressive choice of shops and restaurants to help pass the time before you need to board.

There are plenty more changes too including a reconfigured departures terminal, taxiway improvements, new aircraft stands, updates to its car parks and luxury lounges.

However, the biggest change comes in the form of the airport’s swish new arrivals terminal, which takes quite a chunk of the budget with a £150million price tag.

The airport has announced that Mace will be the main contractor for the construction, which is due to start in spring 2019 and expected to be completed by autumn 2020.

The impressive 39,000 square metre terminal will be designed to handle the millions of passengers travelling through the airport each year, and will boast features such as larger areas for passport control to make for a potentially smoother journey.

Currently easyJet and Ryanair are two of the biggest airlines operating at London Stansted, while recently WOW Air announced it was moving its London service from Gatwick to Stansted.

Ken O’Toole, CEO of London Stansted, said: "I’m delighted to welcome Mace on board as we now focus on the most critical phase in the transformation of London Stansted.

"Mace has a great track record of delivering major projects like this on time, on budget and to the highest quality.

"London Stansted’s transformation project is really gathering momentum.

"We’ve made fantastic progress so far, but it’s this year when the project starts to take-off when work begins on our arrivals terminal.

"The terminal is the most significant contract the airport has awarded as part of this project, and when complete it will provide a first-class, technology enabled, experience for our passengers."
