Now, Sykes Holiday Cottages has provided heaps of inspiration as the cottage rental firm has polled 2,000 Brits to find just what is particularly special about the UK in winter – and shared their findings exclusively with Mirror Online.
Topping the list? Seeing the Northern Lights from the Isle of Skye in Scotland (it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience after all).
The Northern Lights were closely followed by staying in a cosy cottage, as well as relaxing in a hot tub under the stars.
Festive hotspots also proved popular – Chester was praised for its Christmas shopping offering, while Manchester's Christmas market was hailed as one of the best spots not to miss.
We take a look at the top 10 best winter experiences in Britain below…
1. See the Northern Lights on the Isle of Skye
There are actually plenty of places to see the Aurora in the UK , but it's the Isle of Skye which has proven particularly popular for putting the odds of seeing the lights in your favour.
Of course there's no guarantee you'll see the lights, but the Isle of Skye still offers up some picturesque rugged landscapes, beaches and charming fishing villages to explore – not a bad consolation prize!
2. Stay in a cosy thatched cottage

Wrapping up by a fireplace in a cosy cottage while sipping on a hot tea (or hot chocolate) or reading a good book? Sounds like total bliss.

In 2019, the market will be running from Friday 8th November through to Sunday 22nd December so there's ample opportunity to go exploring.

Not only does it offer up plenty of pre-Christmas pampering opportunities, but it also offers a warm rooftop pool boasting panoramic views of the city.
7. Go Christmas shopping in Chester
Chester is already a pretty beautiful city, but during the festive season it gets transformed into a festive wonderland, complete with wooden chalets offering unique gifts and festive bites.
There are also some Christmas parades to explore, as well as fun pantomimes and plenty of brilliant restaurants where you can replenish your energy after a busy day of searching out those perfect gifts for your loved ones.
8. Explore the Peak District
Another breathtaking destination for a walking holiday in winer, the Peak District offers up plenty of those postcard-worthy winter landscapes.
