Best time to book flights for 2020 holidays and get the cheapest deals

Used up all your annual leave for 2019 but trying to keep those winter blues at bay by planning next year's holidays?

Well the good news is that planning ahead could actually help you bag the best bargains for cheap flights, according to research by online travel agency Opodo .

The firm looked at average prices for return flights from the UK and Ireland for both short-haul and long-haul, to determine when you should be booking your flights, and the best times of the year for nabbing the cheapest fares.

Now, they've shared their top three tips for bagging the best bargains, whether you're looking for early bird deals or leaving it a little late.

1. Book in January

According to the report, January had the cheapest average price for flights with tickets around £241.

Of course this isn't surprising, as the first month of the year is when a lot of travel firms slash prices and host flash sales – so it's well worth keeping your eyes peeled for a deal.

Just avoid booking in July if you can – this proved to have the highest average price of flights at £344.

2. Sunday is not just for lie-ins

Yes, you can still enjoy those lazy mornings and hearty Sunday Roasts, but leave some space in your day for holiday planning as Sunday is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight, with an average global ticket price of £574.

However if you prefer to keep the Monday blues at bay by booking a trip, then you won't necessarily pay a hefty price, as this proved the second cheapest day of the week with an average price of £586.
