PlayStation 5 trademark registered by Sony – indicating launch could be imminent

It’s one of the most highly anticipated gaming consoles of the year, and now Sony has dropped a massive hint that the PlayStation 5 launch could be imminent.

Sony has officially registered the name PS5 in Europe, according to a new report by LetsGoDigital.

LetsGoDigital explained: “The Japanese game manufacturer had the name PS5 registered at the IGE IPI (Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property) on January 27, 2020. The application was submitted under Class 9, which also includes game computers.”

While Sony confirmed the name ‘PlayStation 5’ back in October, the fact that the name has now been trademarked suggests that a launch could happen any day now.

This is especially true when looking back at previous PlayStation launches.

LetsGoDigital added: “To get an idea of how it went at the time of the introduction of the PlayStation 4, on February 13, 2013, the trademark for PS4 was filed in many European countries, including Switzerland. The official introduction followed on February 20.”

The trademark registration comes shortly after rumours suggested that Sony could launch the console at an even ton February 29.

Reddit user PennyOhms spotted that Sony Hall is booked for a ‘private event’ that evening.

They wrote: “Rumoured Venue for PS5 Sony Event closed for "Private Event" on Saturday Feb 29th. Could this be it?”

While previous rumours suggested an earlier launch date of February 5, fans have noticed that Sony does not have any events at Sony Hall that night.

PennyOhms added: “Much later than the Rumoured Feb 5th, but nothing is showing on that day.”
