Samsung had already teased that a new Galaxy Watch was coming this summer and, right on time, things have finally been made official. The new Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will go on sale later this month and include one big upgrade that their biggest rival – the Apple Watch – simply can’t match.
Tucked under the hood of these wearables is a 3-in-1 Bioactive Sensor that can check a range of metrics including your body fat, muscle and all-important BMI. This measurement is vital for showing how healthy you are and whether the 18 months of lockdown has meant you’re now dangerously overweight.
Along with all those new stats the Galaxy Watch range continues to be able to check the health of your heart and provide an instant blood pressure reading straight from your wrists.
The Galaxy Watch 4 even keeps a better eye on things when you head to bed with new extras such as snore detection and continuous blood oxygen monitoring whilst asleep.
Of course, most of us wear a smartwatch to help keep us more active and Samsung reckons it’s got this covered with the Watch 4 now able to track 100 different forms of exercise. There’s also the addition of improved home workouts this new wearable able to beam heart rate and calories burned straight to your Samsung TV when doing classes on your living room floor.
Along with those big upgrades to its health and fitness capabilities the new Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic also get a refreshed design that’s now thinner than before.
Those buying the cheaper Galaxy Watch 4 will find a sleek aluminium case whilst the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is made from stainless steel and this more premium model also gets the famous rotating bezel that allows you to navigate around the brighter screen without touching it.
Samsung is also promising faster performance thanks to a new processor that’s been tucked inside.
So that’s all the new hardware but don’t forget that this is the first Galaxy Watch to get Samusng’s latest One UI Watch software that’s been created via a joint venture between Samsung and Google.
Until now, all Samsung watches used the firm’s own Tizen system but that’s changing with the new OS helping to bring more apps to wrists along with improved compatibility with all Android phones and not just those made by Samsung.
Samsung and Google are promising that One UI Watch will open up new features and integrations with popular third-party apps available to download from Google Play directly on your Galaxy Watch.
As part of the new experience, once you install watch-compatible apps on your smartphone, they will be swiftly downloaded onto your smartwatch.
If you’ve customised your clock app on your phone to show the time in different cities around the globe, this will be automatically reflected on your watch as well. And if you block calls and messages from your watch, they will now be blocked on your smartphone, too.
In addition, Samsung will bring an improved watch face design tool, making it easier than ever for designers to create new watch faces.
“The last year has seen a significant rise in the number of consumers using wearables to track their health and fitness,” said Teg Dosanjh, Director of Connected Services and Technology, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland. “As we gradually return to a more normal way of life, we understand our customers want more from their smartwatches, inspiring the upgrades we have made with the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic. From our innovative BioActive Sensor to our brand-new Wear OS – developed in partnership with Google – the Galaxy Watch4 series is built to give our customers a deeper, more helpful understanding of their overall wellbeing.”
The new Galaxy Watch range will be available to pre order from August 11 with prices starting from £259 for the standard wearable with the more premium Galaxy Watch Classic costing £359.
