Huge Google Maps update has just fixed one of its biggest irritations

It’s been a big night for Google with the US technology giant announcing a swathe of updates including a new feature coming to Google Maps.

The firm’s yearly I/O event has just got underway in California and there’s been plenty of exciting news with some Maps users now able to access its new AR mode.

Anyone who owns a Pixel smartphone can now try out this latest addition which uses clever augmented reality to show directions on the screen – ending the nightmare of working out which way you need to go.

Although Google Maps already offers comprehensive tools for finding your way around many still struggle to know which direction to walk in when first launching the app.

The new AR setting aims to end that by overlaying directions on a real-world view of the street you are on.

This should help you know precisely where you are, and exactly which way to start walking.

Along with this clever Maps update Google has also revealed its next range of hardware which includes the budget Pixel 3a.

This £399 phone arrives with a 5.6-inch OLED screen, quick Qualcomm 670 processor and fast charging battery which can get 7 hours of usage in just 15 minutes.

There’s also stereo speakers and you even get a headphone port – something that’s almost impossible to find on all of the latest phones.

These are are all great features considering that low price but things get even better for photography fans as the 3a includes Google’s very clever rear camera.

This feature-packed snapper is regarded as one of the best in the business with it able to add DSLR-style depth of field to your photos and take pictures in almost total darkness without the need for a flash.

Google is also offering free, unlimited image storage at high quality so you should never run out space on the phone.

Alongside the standard Pixel 3a, there’s also a larger 3a XL which features a 6-inch screen and bigger battery.

This phone will arrive with a price of £469.

Pixel 3a and 3a XL are available in Just Black, Clearly White and Purple-ish colours and if you’re looking for cut-price call maker then they are definitely worth a look.

Along with a new smartphone Google has also announced its latest smart speaker.

The Nest Hub Max packs all the usual intelligent features but now includes a bigger 10-inch screen and in-built camera.

This means you can now make video calls, watch YouTube videos and even use the device as a Nest Cam for added security in your home.
