The key to WhatsApp's success is its simplicity, allowing users to exchange messages, photos and videos with each other instantly, with no messing about.
But just occasionally it's nice to add a bit of character or emphasis to your messages, just to remind you friends you're not an automaton.
A little-known feature in WhatsApp allows you to do just that, by changing the font of all or part of your messages, or make the text bold, italic or "strikethough".
Here's how to do it.
How to change WhatsApp font
The first option is to change your text into a typewriter-style font called "Monospace".
This can be done by inserting three "backticks" on either side of the text you want to reformat before pressing send.
A backtick looks like a reverse apostrophe, and can be found on your phone by holding down the apostrophe button on your keyboard.
So, for example, you could write “`How's it going?“` and the words between the backticks will be appear in the Monospace font.
We tried it for ourselves and can confirm that it does work:
How to make WhatsApp text bold or italic
If you want to emphasis a particular word or phrase in your message, a good way is to make it italic or bold.
All you have to do is add asterisks either side of a word to make it bold or underscores to make it italic.
So, for example, typing *bold* would give you bold and typing _italic_ would give you italic.

Finally, if you want say something without really saying it, you can use the strikethrough tool.
This is a good way to indicate your thoughts on a subject in a quick and

To strikethrough your message, place a tilde (~) on either sides of the text.

If remembering those shortcuts seems like a bit too much effort, there's another way to change your text font in WhatsApp.
If you're on Android, you can tap and hold the text you're typing, then tap the three dots (More) and choose among bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace.
On iPhone, you can tap and hold the text you're typing, then tap " B I U " and choose among bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace.
There is no option to underline words.
