Google is trolling everyone by leaking a tiny new Pixel on Instagram

Google is having some fun ahead of the Pixel 3 launch next week. Not only have the phones leaked in some detail, but there has also been some considerable speculation – so the company is playing up to it.

On Instagram the MadeByGoogle account tweeted a picture that shows several sizes of new Pixel. In the text the company explains that it has heard a rumour about a new mini Pixel and asks "how small is too small".

A clever piece of promotion ahead of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL launch , which happens next Tuesday.

And some people would probably love to see a smaller Pixel. Although the idea of one that’s small enough to attach to your keyring is probably a pipe dream – for now at least.

This may, possibly, be a reaction to the rumoured Pixel Ultra. While there has been almost no credible evidence the company will launch this phone, some fan-made renders have whipped up a storm.

Pixel fans leapt upon this idea as they didn’t want to see their favourite phone adopt an iPhone-style notch. Especially one that was widely described as "ugly" on social media.

The Ultra would have a collection of improbable features, like an edge-to-edge screen that had no notch and somehow pack in a front-facing camera as well. It’s the very definition of wishful thinking.

The company also poked fun at the rumoured "super selfie mode" with a sketch that depicts a phone with a massive pop-out zoom lens.

Perhaps all of this is a clever attempt to deflect from the fact that the leaks for both the Pixel phones have been so comprehensive that there will be few surprises at the official launch.

Google has struggled to keep the new phones under wraps. Part of that has been the usual leaks that all major phones tend to suffer with but Google has had another serious problem to deal with too.

In August the leaks picked up pace because a shipment of Pixel 3 XLs got stolen. These were then reportedly sold for $2000 a piece and then began showing up in YouTube videos.

According to 9to5Google both manufacturer Foxconn and Google are investigating the theft.

We’ll be covering the official Google Pixel 3 launch on Tuesday October 9.
