Google Chromecast: Why is my Chromecast not working? Troubleshooting guide

Chromecast allows users to stream content from Netflix, Hulu, or even just duplicate your Android smartphone – at least when everything is working correctly. To help, has revealed how to fix your Chromecast when it stops working.

What is Google Chromecast?

Chromecast is a cheap and easy way to stream video content right to your TV.

Google Chromecast is one of the best streaming devices available.

The device plugs into your TV to provide easy access to multiple streaming services.

These range from Netflix and YouTube to Hulu and Google Play.

Users can even throw — or “cast”— content from your smartphone or the Chrome browser on your laptop to your TV.

How to restart Chromecast:

The first step you should try when your Chromecast is unresponsive is to reboot the device.

The easiest way to do this is the tried and true method of unplugging the Google plug, waiting for a minute, then plugging it back in.

Give it a few minutes to start up, then try casting to your device again.

More often than not this will get Chromecast up and running again.

Check the Wi-Fi:

A common reason for devices not working relates to your router.

Just because the router working on one device does not necessarily rule it out when your Chromecast is not working.

A quick power cycle of your router should eliminate any potential issues.

Simply unplug your router for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

Then once your router has booted, try your connection again.

Another potential cause of poor connectivity is the location of the Chromecast behind the TV.

The device is nicely hidden away, meaning it might not be receiving enough Wi-Fi juice to binge your favourite shows.

If you are still experiencing issues, try connecting the HDMI extender included in the box and physically separating your Chromecast from your television.

Those who own a Chromecast Ultra have the extra option of connecting an ethernet cable to the power brick.

Update the Chrome browser:

If you normally cast from your computer, it is possible a newer version of Chrome is available.

This may cause the Chromecast to stop working or prevent the cast button from appearing on various websites.

To update Google Chrome, begin by opening it on your computer.

Next, click the More icon in the top right, then tap Update Google Chrome – the button will not appear if you’re on the latest version.

Then click Relaunch and perform a factory reset on your Chromecast.

If Chromecast still is no working, it is time to perform a factory reset.

Although you will not lose any data, this does require users to set up your Chromecast all over again.

Without unplugging your Chromecast, hold down the button on the back of the device for at least 25 seconds.

The TV screen will eventually go blank, and the reset process will begin.

Once this has finished, you can begin the setup process again.

It is best if possible to use a different device than you used the first time.

This will rule out any device-related issues and the process is just as easy on smartphones, windows, or Chromebooks.
