Facebook ‘Status Update’ box inexplicably disappears from some users’ news feeds

Facebook users are reporting that the 'Status Update' box has disappeared from their news feeds, leaving them unable to post comments, photos or videos.

The bizarre issue appears to be affecting users in the UK and United States, with dozens taking to social media to complain.

"So is anyone else's Facebook b0rked? Seems that the dialogue box to post a status update has been removed from my News Feed," tweeted Ken Yeung, Technology Editor at Flipboard.

"Facebook isn't giving me the status update window (on my computer) It's just news feed stories. I can't post anything, what's going on?," wrote another Twitter user.

The social network has been having issues since 12:01 EDT (17:01 BST), according to website DownDetector.com, which monitors online outages.

The problem only seems to be affecting the desktop version of Facebook, and the good news is that the Status Update box is still appearing on users' profile pages, so they can post updates from there.

"Nowhere to type a post in the news feed, but am able to do it when I go to my home page," one user wrote on the DownDetector forum.

"I can post using my profile but not on my feed My what's on your mind box is gone on my newsfeed," another wrote.

The news coincides with reports that the Instagram app is suffering issues, with users in the US reporting that the app is crashing when they try to open it on their smartphones.

Facebook is yet to comment on the problems.
