Just hours after the stealth launch of Halo: Infinite as part of the Xbox's 20th anniversary celebrations, Microsoft has pulled another major exclusive from its sleeve: Elder Scrolls VI.
The long-awaited successor to the decade-old Skyrim will only be available on Xbox and PC. That's according to Phil Spencer, Microsoft's Xbox chief, who told GQ that the as-yet-untitled fantasy RPG will be packaged under the Xbox and Game Pass banner.
"It's not about punishing any other platform, like I fundamentally believe all of the platforms can continue to grow. But in order to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the full complete package of what we have. And that would be true when I think about Elder Scrolls VI," Spencer said.
If true, it would be a major win for Xbox, which has struggled to nab the same number of exclusives at launch as its closest competitor, the PS5. The previous entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, Skyrim, remains one of the best-selling games of all time.
While Spencer kept quiet on the details, such as a release date or a setting, he admitted that Elder Scrolls VI will be using the same next-gen game engine and tech as Bethesda's hotly anticipated sci-fi RPG Starfield, due for release next year.
He explains this is because Xbox wants the new sequel to be playable for as long as Skyrim, which has already enjoyed more than ten years of re-releases and a constant player base.

"I think that would drive me crazy to try to say, 'Okay. this is the thing you have to top'," he said.
"But then you realise, like, The Elder Scrolls VI has got to be a 'decade game'. How do you make a game where you go into it, like, 'people have to play it for a decade?'"
While there's no official details, fan theories have been swirling around the Elder Scrolls 6 for decades.

Many believe that the next game will be called 'Redfall', which Bethesda trademarked in 2018.
Elder Scrolls hyper-fans on Reddit have theorised it could refer to a deadly plague, possibly inspired by COVID-19, sweeping the game world of Tamriel.
