Millions of EE customers could see their monthly bills increase for the second time in two years. The price rise could see £27.48 added to their bill over the course of the next 12 months. The mobile network has already notified customers who will be impacted by the change. Bills will typically increase by 2.2 percent from March 30, 2020.
The BT-owned network says the price rise is in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation, which is published by the Office for National Statistics in January of each year.
In the email to customers, EE says: “We’re making some changes to the price of your mobile plan. We know price changes are never welcome, but it means we can continue to invest in our network and deliver the best possible experience. From 30 March 2020, the price of your plan will increase in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation, published by the Office for National Statistics in January of this year. The rate this year is 2.2 percent.”
EE is allowed to increase the price of your contract because of a clause in the terms and conditions that warns customers about possible price rises in line with the Retail Price Index each year. The latter is a measure of inflation published by the Office of National Statistics which is designed to measure the change in the cost of a sample of retail goods and services in the UK.
Although it’s possible to leave your contract before the agreed end, you’ll likely have to cough-up a fee to do so. This is typically the total number of months left in your contract, minus VAT.

That’s likely to cost you much, much more than simply paying the extra 2.2 percent fee. So, it’s probably worth sticking with your contract, especially if you’re otherwise happy with your existing minutes and calls allowance, as well as your 4G or 5G coverage.
What the EE price rise could mean for your monthly bill –
For a £29.99 a month contract – £0.65 extra a month, £7.80 a year
For a £49.99 a month contract – £1.09 extra a month, £13.08 a year
For a £64.99 a month contract – £1.42 extra a month, £17.04 a year

The increase will be applied to the price plan before the discount is applied. So, you’ll still get the same discount to the price plan, although, you’ll inevitably end up still paying a little more than before.
Customers can find all the details about their plans, as well as the price increase in March 2020 on the MyEE app, or on the account page on the EE website.
In a statement to Express.co.uk, a spokesperson for EE said: “We go further every day to provide our customers with the UK’s best mobile network and great customer service, with 4G and 5G coverage in more places than any other operator. Like many service providers, our pay monthly plans increase by RPI annually, and this year customers on our most popular plan will typically see an increase of 58p a month. We’re currently contacting our customers to remind them this will take effect from 30th March 2020.”
