Domino’s has unveiled an autonomous pizza delivery ‘droid which will bring food to takeaway fiends who can’t face talking to another human before stuffing their face.
Londoners may remember a similar experiment in London, in which robots resembling lunch hampers wheeled food around the capital.
The latest robotic delivery drive is taking place in Houston, where the pizza chain has partnered with a tech firm called Nuro.
‘Partnering with Domino’s marks an important step on our journey to become the autonomous delivery partner of choice for retailers of all kinds,’ Nuro wrote
‘Domino’s is the global leader in pizza delivery, selling 3 million pizzas per day from over 16,000 stores worldwide.
‘At Nuro, we’re leading the way in driverless deliveries, focused on moving goods from stores to neighbourhoods quickly, affordably, and safely.
‘Together Domino’s and Nuro will make pizza delivery even more affordable, accessible, and enjoyable.’
Domino’s is not the only firm to be working with delivery ‘bots.
Ford has developed a walking bipedal delivery robot that could one day deliver parcels directly to your home.
Eventually, the company says it’ll be used to pick up parcels from Ford’s autonomous cars and walk them to your doorstep.
Amazon also tested out a delivery droid that’s actually rather loveable – even though it heralds the beginning of an era where human employees will be replaced by machines.
The online retail colossus is testing out a robot called Scout on the streets of a neighbourhood in Snohomish County, Washington.
Scout is about the size of a small cooler and trundles along at a walking pace to deliver packages to Prime customers.
