China showcases scary new weapon that launches ‘swarm’ of ‘loitering’ drones

A Chinese weapons expo has seen a terrifying drone swarm launcher demonstrated.

The Zhuhai Air Show saw the unnamed light vehicle exhibited complete with a launcher capable of carrying up to 18 drones.

Footage of the bizarre machine, which is produced by China Ordnance Equipment Group (COEG), was featured on a Chinese state TV channel.

Also state-owned, COEG claimed this was the first time the chilling contraption was shown to a public market.

It is understood to be designed to be highly mobile and able to cover ground quickly and nimbly.

The launcher sees individual launch canisters hold each of the separate drones, thought to be similar in principle to Iranian ‘Kamikaze’ drones being used by Russia on the front lines in Ukraine.

These drones, the Warzone reports, however, can be used in either an attacking sense or as a method of intelligence gathering.

The launcher’s drones can be used for reconnaissance and damage assessment, as well as for precision strikes or, if used in groups, cluster attacks.

The TV channel explained that the weapon would be ideally used for strikes against ground personnel or light vehicles.

The nose of the drone appears, from images, to be on a gimbal.

On it is what looks like a sensor that could be used for detection or navigation.

Drone strikes have become an increasingly prominent aspect of modern warfare.

In Ukraine, drones have been dropping on the country's capital Kyiv despite it being a long way behind the font lines of the fighting.

Meanwhile, larger weapons such as Reaper drones have been deployed by NATO for years in places like Syria and Afghanistan.

Together these kinds of weapons demonstrate the changing face of fighting with technology playing a larger and larger, and perhaps more terrifying, role.
