Big Galaxy Watch update brings new Gmail features to your wrist

Email might be the bane of our social and working lives but it’s a handy, inescapable technology we all have to use. Services like Gmail have moved from desktop computers to our smartphones, but thanks to a big update from Google you can now read your emails on your smartwatch.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, Watch 5, or Watch 6 then you can download the Gmail app now by going to the Google Play Store on your watch. Previously, the Android smartwatches could display notifications from the Gmail phone on your app, but could only preview email subject lines and not much else.

Now with a full smartwatch app, Galaxy Watch and the Google Pixel Watch can run the new Gmail app. It means you can now access your emails on a dedicated wrist-based app to scroll through and refresh your inbox, tap on and read the entire text of messages, and even switch between multiple Gmail accounts.

You can reply, delete, archive, and forward emails all in miniature, mirroring similar functionality to Gmail on your phone. If you receive an image or attachment, you’ll have to open the email on your phone to view it properly – but otherwise, this is a big and welcome upgrade for Gmail users.

This update will also be live for the Google Pixel Watch 2, which will go on sale this Friday 12 October alongside the new Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

That’s not all for Gmail updates either with Google also announcing that from 2024 the service will have new and better protections against spam, including easier ways for you to unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters and spam.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. This may include adverts from us and 3rd parties based on our understanding. You can unsubscribe at any time. More info

New rules will require people who send over 5,000 emails per day to jump through more hoops to make sure they are genuine senders and to curb the level of modern-day unwanted emails. Paired with the handy update on your smartwatch, the Gmail app will be as useful and clever as ever come 2024.
