Apple iOS 13: What time does iOS 13 update go live today? What phones are compatible?

With more than a billion users, Apple iOS is one of the world’s biggest consumer operating systems. Apple will release the iOS 13 update today, September 19. OS releases typically occur at 10am Pacific Time (6pm BST). The update can take a short while to roll-out, meaning users should not be surprised if it takes half an hour to appear on an Apple device.

How to install Apple iOS 13:

iOS 13 introduces a bold new look, major updates to the apps you use every day (and) new ways to help you protect your privacy

Users can expect to eventually receive notifications prompting them to update.

Should you wish to force the iOS 13 update as soon as possible, you can do so via Settings > General > Software Update.

When planning to install the update, users should ensure their iPhone is charged and there is sufficient storage available on their device.

Only iOS 13 is being released today (together with watchOS 6 for recent Apple Watches).

The release of iPadOS 13 is scheduled for September 30, along with iOS 13.1.

Unfortunately, not every iPhone running the previous operating system, iOS 12, can receive the iOS 13 upgrade.

Those running one of those handsets will need to either upgrade your iPhone to a newer model, or live without the latest features.

The only iPhone models which will receive the iOS 13 upgrade are:

iPhone 11

iPhone 11 Pro

iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone XS

iPhone XS Max

iPhone XR

iPhone X

iPhone 8

iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 7

iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 6s

iPhone 6s Plus

Consequently iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5S will no longer receive the latest mobile operating system upgrades from Apple.

What new features will iOS 13 provide?

Dark mode is a new colour scheme designed for low-light environments, which is kinder on your eyes and conserves battery life.

The colour scheme is integrated throughout iOS, and can also be implemented in third-party apps.

Dark mode can either be turned on manually, using a new button in the iPhone’s Control Centre, or scheduled to turn on and off at a certain times.

iOS 13 also brings Apple’s new Arcade game subscription service to users’ iPhone.

Subscribers will receive unlimited access to a trove of more than 100 exclusive games all playable across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV.

Apple Arcade subscriptions costs £4.99 per month and is launching with a free one-month trial.

Another headline features with iOS 13 offers a new way to sign in to apps and websites quickly and easily using the Apple ID you already have.

This means filling out forms or creating new passwords is a thing of the past.

Apple users need only select “Sign in with Apple” and verify their identity using Face ID or Touch ID.

Sign in with Apple works on all your Apple devices as well as the web and apps on Android or Windows.
