Yankees might be forcing Manny Machado to make a tough decision

LAS VEGAS – Yankees president Randy Levine tossed off a telling line last week, something he said with a smile, but has taken on a greater meaning in recent days.

“Last I looked, we were under the (luxury) tax (threshold). We’re pretty financially prudent these days," Levine said at Yankee Stadium last Tuesday.

That said, the Yankees are still in the picture on free-agent slugger Manny Machado, and they can’t be counted out on Bryce Harper until he signs somewhere.

Maybe this will change this winter, but the Yankees are currently broadcasting that there are spending limits they aren’t willing to exceed; they’ll just move on to something else – via trade or free agency.

That point was brought to light again with Fancred.com and MLB Network’s Jon Heyman’s tweet on Sunday night that the Yankees expect to meet with Machado and his representatives, but that the club won’t be offering a $300 million contract.
