But on December 30, 2022, he was arrested in Spain for an alleged incident.

Why is Dani Alves in prison?

Brazilian international Alves was accused of sexual assault in a nightclub in Barcelona on December 30, 2022.

The former Barcelona defender is understood to be denying any wrongdoing.

But after hearing testimonies from Alves, the alleged victim and witnesses, a judge ordered the footballer to be jailed without bail.

He will remain in prison after a Spanish court on June 12 denied his second request to be freed on bail.

The Barcelona court said Alves remains a flight risk and should stay detained until the investigation concludes.

A trial date has not been set.

What has Dani Alves said?

Alves initially claimed to have never met the woman in question.

However, he reportedly later changed his story to say that the pair had consensual sex on the night.

Alves has been married to Spanish model Joana Sanz since 2017.

Who is Dani Alves?

Alves is famed for his time playing as a right-back for La Liga side Barcelona.

He is one of the most decorated footballers of all time, having won six La Liga titles, two Ligue 1 titles and the Serie A.

He won the UEFA Champions league on three occasions while playing for Barcelona, in 2009, 2011 and 2015.

He also won two UEFA Cup titles with Sevilla in 2006 and 2007.

After a successful spell in Spain, Alves moved to Juventus on a free transfer in 2016.

He helped the Turin club to a league title, a Coppa Italia and was an important part of the side that reached the 2017 UEFA Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid.

After just one season in Italy, Alves joined French side Paris Saint-Germain, where he enjoyed further trophy success.

After a spell at Sao Paulo in Brazil, Alves re-joined Barcelona in 2021, playing under former teammate Xavi.

He left for a second time in 2022 after 17 appearances, signing for UNAM in Mexico, playing 13 games before they terminated his contract in 2023.

He enjoyed a successful international career with Brazil, winning two Copa America titles, two FIFA Confederation Cups and represented them at three FIFA World cups.
