Man sparks debate after not giving up his seat to a pregnant woman

Man with ‘bad feet and knees’ sparks fierce debate after REFUSING to give up his seat to pregnant woman in queue during 40-minute wait – but what do YOU think?

  • The US-based Reddit user took to the discussion forum to ask ‘am I the a**hole?’
  • He said he took his own camping chair to queue for his nephews’ graduation
  • But when a pregnant woman asked if she could use it instead he politely said no

A man has caused quite the stir online after revealing how he refused to give up his seat to a pregnant woman while they waited in line.

Detailing his story anonymously on Reddit, the US-based user told how he took his own camping chair to queue for his nephews’ high school graduation as he did not want to be standing during the 40-minute wait.

While he was waiting, a pregnant woman joined next to him and asked ‘within five minutes (politely admittedly) if she could have my chair as she was going to have trouble standing the whole time.’

The man then revealed on the Reddit subreddit known as ‘am I the a**hole,’ that he said ‘no, sorry I need it more (bad feet/knees) and went back to my things.’

Revealing further detail about the situation, the Reddit user said that after being rejected, the woman asked again ‘within two minutes’ but he gave the same response.

The man then said than after two rejections, the woman ‘got a little mad at me and said that she was going to be struggling the whole time and asked her partner to tell me.’

The woman’s partner then asked ‘politely’ but the man said he gave the same response for a third time.

In a bid to help remedy the situation, he suggested that the couple could ‘wait in their car or just sit in the ground’ but at that point the husband ‘directly’ called him an ‘***hole’ but left him alone.

Puzzled by the situation, the man asked the Reddit community ‘am I the a**hole for telling a pregnant woman to sit on the ground instead of giving her my seat?’

So far the post has attracted reactions from more than 21,000 users, with over 2,500 Redditors leaving comments.

But the majority of others appear to have sided with the man.

One person wrote in his defense: ‘You refused to give up the chair you brought because you needed it due to your own health conditions. I do feel for the woman, but she and her partner should have brought their own chairs and not assumed they were entitled to yours.’

Another commenter slammed the couple for getting angry with the man, and deemed it as unacceptable behavior.

‘They asked politely then didn’t take “no” for an answer and became abusive. This is a very dangerous line to take. “No” must mean “no.” For the sake of everyone, and especially if they’re carrying a daughter.

Other women also called out the mother-to-be for her ‘entitled’ behavior.

One mused: ‘She’s not dying, she’s pregnant. While I was extremely pregnant, I stood in longer lines for longer stretches of time.’

Another said the woman and her husband should have planned better if they knew waiting around was going to be such an issue.

The female Redditor wrote: ‘There’s no way that I could have stood that long when I was heavily pregnant (twins, etc.)

‘But, I knew my limitations and would have planned ahead and not expected a stranger to give up his seat.

‘That’s the real issue here, not how difficult it is to wait in line during pregnancy. Because indeed it can be.’

Another bluntly replied on the thread: ‘To me, the entitlement of pregnant women floors me… Plan for it then. I walk with a cane, bad knees, bad back. I would never ask someone for a chair they brought. If I didn’t bring my own, well. That’s my bad.’
