Piers Morgan rages at 'pathetic' Arsenal and calls woeful loss to Brentford 'a new low' for Mikel Arteta

PIERS MORGAN blasted Arsenal’s surprise defeat away at Brentford following their 2-0 loss to the Premier League’s newbies.

And the lifelong Gunners fan believes the result marks a fresh low for the Emirates giants under Mikel Arteta with the team facing Chelsea next.

The Arsenal boss, 39, has come under pressure from some of the club’s supporters on social media following three pre-season defeats coupled with the outcome of their Bees clash.

Recent results for the side who came eighth in the league last term – their lowest ever finish in the Prem – include friendly losses to Chelsea, Tottenham and Hibernian.

And Morgan, 56, who is a season ticket holder, did not hold back in his assessment of the Gunners’ loss to Thomas Frank’s Brentford team.

Via his Twitter account, the columnist and TV presenter said: “This is pathetic.

"We’re being bullied off the park by a team of players who’ve never performed in the Premier League.

“Even by Arteta standards, a new low. I can’t do this for the next nine months.”

Goals netted by Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard marked a historic win for Brentford who played in the top-flight for the first time in 75 years.

And the Bees, who play Crystal Palace next, became only the 12th club to win on their Prem debut – from a total of 50 teams who have competed in the top-flight since 1992.

Arsenal, who will go head-to-head with a Chelsea side boosted by the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku, will be keen to bounce back from their defeat.

And Arteta, who apologised to travelling Gunners fans for the Brentford result, stressed the need for a different performance and outcome against the Blues.

The Arsenal chief said: "We have two big games coming up right now and we need a different performance to get a different result."

The Gunners have strengthened their defensive ranks with the transfers of ex-Anderlecht ace Albert Sambi Lokonga and former Brighton centre-back Ben White

And both players made their Arsenal Prem debuts against Brentford.

The Emirates outfit are reportedly on the hunt for a number 10 and have been linked with a permanent move for Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard or a potential loan swoop for Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.

The club is facing a potentially tricky run in their next five league games including clashes with Prem champs Man City and Tottenham.

And they are currently without the attacking services of skipper Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette who were both ill on Friday.

Meanwhile, Eddie Nketiah is also currently absent and recovering from bruised ankle sustained during a friendly clash against Chelsea.
