Mauricio Pochettino accused of turning into Eric Cantona with bizarre comment on Chelsea's poor form | The Sun

MAURICIO POCHETTINO has been accused of going "full Cantona" after bizarrely referencing lemons while discussing Chelsea's poor start to the season.

The Argentine, 51, has discussed using lemons in the past as he believes they absorb negative energy.

But he has now insisted they only began to have an effect at Spurs after two years.

And he has used that as an explanation for why they are yet to have any impact on Chelsea – who have won just one of five Premier League games so far this season.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: "They [the lemons] started to work after two years at Tottenham. Give time to the lemons.

"It is a thing that we all believe. If you want to have good energy you need to implement all the things that you believe.

"I believe in the lemons but at Tottenham they started to work after one and a half, two years. They need a long time, they are not magic, but more than ever I still believe in them.

"Today in my office I have yellow ones, green ones, different types. From Spain, from Italy. I don’t want to lie, there is a big box of lemons.

"I always thought the yellow lemons worked much better than the green but now I believe in any colour – any colour can help.

"If I could get a blue lemon it would be even better."

Pochettino was then asked about whether a green lemon is actually a lime.

To which he replied: "A lime is not a lemon. It is a brother, maybe with a different mother or different father."

The comments have been met with widespread confusion on social media.

And one person said: "Mauricio Pochettino has gone 'full Cantona' in The Guardian this morning 🍋."

This is in reference to Cantona's famous "seagulls follow the trawler" speech from a 1995 press conference when he took aim at the media.

He said: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea."

Meanwhile, other football fans were thoroughly amused by Pochettino's comments.

One replied: "What on earth has happened to this guy?"
