Man Utd concede defeat to Real Madrid in transfer race to sign Ajax star Donny van de Beek – The Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED have conceded defeat to Real Madrid over signing Ajax's midfield scoring sensation Donny van de Beek, reports say.

But losing out on the £47million deal could strengthen United's hand in keeping Paul Pogba and heighten their interest in Sporting Lisbon hero Bruno Fernandes.

The Daily Star claim Real after overwhelming favourites for Van de Beek, who has netted 25 goals in the past 18 months.

The 22-year-old said last week it was "good" to be linked with two such big clubs.

But he also told FOX Sports Netherlands: "I have said it before, and I will say it again: I will remain at Ajax this season. And maybe next season as well.

"These reports about Real Madrid or Man United are a good sign, but it is not important now.

"I've said I will stay at Ajax and I will do so for 100 per cent."

United, though, will surely rue pulling out of a £20m deal for Van de Beek last summer.

Now their main target for an attacking midfielder, Portugal star Fernandes, would seemingly cost more than £50m.

Sporting want £68m but United's current offer is thought to be £42,5m plus £8.5m add-ons.

And tonight the Portuguese giants insisted the 25-year-old remains part of their long-term plans.
