Jose Mourinho optimistic David De Gea will stay and claims he would have been just as good in goal in Man Utd win over Young Boys

But the Special One did admit De Gea's 70th minute wonder save was probably out of his reach — as he delivered promising news over the Spaniard's new contract.

The Spanish international's spring across goal prevented Young Boys from taking the lead in their mid-week clash, before Marouane Fellaini gave them some breathing space.

But Mourinho wasn't content with just one wonder save, speaking about his keeper's performance in their 1-0 Champions League victory.

He said: "I think David performance [against Young Boys] you have to say for 92 minutes, to be David there or myself would be the same.

Perhaps it was Mourinho's way of motivating his keeper ahead of their trip to St Mary's tomorrow, where United face Southampton who have failed to beat them in five matches, in all competitions.

And he might know, given his father Jose Mourinho Felix was a Portuguese international keeper, while son Jose Jr was a stopper in Fulham's youth team.

Reiterating his comments from his post-match presser, after United's Champions League victory, Mourinho continued to refer to the shot-stopper as world class.

"Manchester United needs the best players in the world, if we want to be Manchester United we need the best player in the world.

An extra year on the decorated keeper's contract has been triggered, meaning he is tied to United until the end of next season.

Talks over the keeper's long-term future seem to have stalled, but the bottle-smashing boss has been on the charm offensive.
