I'm a former Chelsea star – my biggest regret is what I said to Di Maria about his wife to put him off… I'm sorry | The Sun

FORMER Chelsea star Filipe Luis has apologised to Angel Di Maria for a comment he made about his wife.

The defender had a successful career that included two spells at Atletico Madrid and a year at Chelsea in the 2014/15 season.

But prior to his move to Stamford Bridge Luis faced Di Maria in a Madrid derby – a match he looks back on with regret.

That's because he tried to unsettle Di Maria by talking about his wife Jorgelina Cardoso.

The trick worked but Luis now regrets his actions so apologised to the Argentine.

He said on the Charla Podcast: "If there is something I regret having done, perhaps it is the only thing I really regret, and I would like to go back in time and not do it, it was against Di María.

"I arrived at Atlético, we were going to play against Real Madrid and [Sergio] Agüero told me: ‘Filipe, if you approach him, he will lose, he will leave the game. Go see him and talk about his wife'.

"And I arrived and said: ‘your wife..’, I pronounced his wife’s name… He looked at me, he was downcast, I won the whole game.

"Di Maria, I’m sorry, I’m sorry I did that, I’m sorry."

Like Luis, Di Maria also had a spell to forget in the Premier League in 2014/15 – at Manchester United.

The World Cup winner lasted just a year at Old Trafford, partly because his partner hated Manchester.

Jorgelina called Manchester a "s***hole" and described people from the city as “weird” and the local food “disgusting”.

She said: “It was horrible! All of it was horrible, we went to the house and we were like… ‘See you later guys, we’re out of here’. When we left, I said to him, ‘Go to any country – except England’. Anyway, one year later and there we were in England and it was horrible, a sh*thole.

“The food’s disgusting. All the girls are all dolled up to the nines, perfectly made-up and there’s me with my hair in a bun and with no make-up on.”
