Even a golfing superstar like Dustin Johnson — the World No. 1 ranked player — can be left looking like a handbag accessory when it comes to getting out of trouble with his fiancee, Paulina Gretzky.
The daughter of ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and Instagram star on Wednesday night relegated her long-term partner to amateur photographer duties when they stepped out together for the Ryder Cup gala dinner at the iconic Palace of Versailles near Paris.
It is just two weeks since Gretzky deleted all trace of Johnson from her Instagram page, which has more than 717,000 followers.
It sparked swirling rumors that one of the highest profile couples in sports was on the rocks — and allegations the golfer struck up a romantic link with California socialite Yassie Safai. Safai said she hardly knew Johnson and denied ever being in a relationship with Johnson.
Johnson eventually responded to the reports of his relationship breakdown by admitting they’ve had their “ups and downs.”
The duo, who have been engaged since 2013, share two children, sons Tatum, 3, and River, 1.
The golfing world was surprised to learn on Wednesday that Gretzky had flown to France to attend the Ryder Cup event with Johnson — when golfer Brooks Koepka’s girlfriend, Jena Sims, posted an image of her with Gretzky in Paris.
Photos of Johnson and Gretzky back together again at the gala event appeared to cement that they have been reunited. However, the heartwarming images of the couple back together again were overshadowed by the humorous scenes of Johnson taking photos of his fiancee as they made a spectacular entrance to the black tie event.
His relegation from star of the show as the No. 1 player in the world to nothing more than a useful accessory for his missus left the internet in stitches.
And, just like that, he’s that little bit closer to clawing his way out of the doghouse.
Gretzky certainly stole the show, but there was glamour as far as the eye could see at the gala event.
