Bury bounce back up to League One at first attempt as 1-1 draw with Tranmere ends Rovers' hopes of automatic promotion

BURY have bounced back up to League One at the first attempt – after their 1-1 draw at Tranmere ended the home side's own hopes of automatic promotion.

The second-placed Shakers are guaranteed a top-three promotion spot as the two teams just below them, Mansfield and MK Dons, meet in a winner-takes-all final day clash.

Winger David Mayor hit Bury's 56th minute equaliser after striker James Norwood headed Rovers in front early on with his 30th goal of the season.

And it means yo-yo club Bury have now gone up to the third tier for the third time in the past nine seasons – just a week after they were put up for sale and a year after they finished bottom of League One by nine points.

Lincoln are already certain to be League Two champions, but there is still so much to play for below them.

MK Dons trail Mansfield on goal difference so can only go up automatically if they beat Town at Milton Keynes in Saturday's finale.

Sixth-placed Tranmere's point tonight ensured themselves a play-off spot.

But five teams are battling to join them by finishing seventh.

Newport hold pole position, with Exeter, Colchester, Carlisle and Stevenage also in contention.

Eleventh-placed Stevenage are the only one of them who will be at home on the last afternoon – against mid-table Cheltenham.
