Bridesmaid Jayzou looks for back-to-back wins at Grafton

Has Grafton trainer Dwayne Schmidt found the way to make Jayzou go one better?

The consistent six-year-old will look for back-to-back wins at Grafton on Monday at just his third start for Schmidt.

Winning is a thing that Jayzou has found difficult in his 38-start career. Placing has not been so much a problem.

He has won just twice with 15 seconds and seven thirds. It would not be unfair to call him a bridesmaid.

“Allan Kehoe actually suggested the horse should come up to me to the owners,” Schmidt said. “When you hear it has won once in more than 30 starts it doesn’t give you much hope, but he goes OK.

“He is always thereabouts and a change in scenery seems to have helped him. Before he came up here he was beaten in a photo in track record time at Tuncurry, so his form wasn’t that bad.”

Jayzou opened his Northern Rivers career by running second to Blinkin Legend at Armidale on Cox Plate day before charging home to win his class 1 at the same on November 11.

Schmidt has made one significant gear change, putting a tongue tie on Jayzou, while also taking winkers off him.

“If you look at his form he is good on firm tracks and I think there is a couple of more wins in him because he gets better as he gets out in trip,” Schmidt said.

“He works like a good horse and I think getting to 1700m he will settle and run a good race. You know he will probably be in the finish and it would be great if he can be winning again.”

Meanwhile, Scone trainer Brett Cavanough will take a raft of last-start winners to his home tack on Monday.

Reward The Chaser, Ibini and Magpie have ones next to their name as they step out at Scone. Cavanough likes the chances of Ibini in the class 3.

“Developing into a really nice type, he was formerly with Ben Smith, he did a good job first up for us and he can keep progressing,” Cavanough told Racing NSW.
