Bartolo Colon still has it.
Colon, now 48 years old, hurled a complete game on Sunday for the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League on just 90 pitches. He surrendered two runs on five hits while notching seven strikeouts and walking one.
Through five starts this season, Colon is 3-1 with a 3.56 ERA.
The 21-year MLB veteran last appeared in the majors in 2018, when he pitched to a 5.78 ERA in 28 games for the Texas Rangers. Colon emerged as a fan favorite in New York during three seasons with the Mets, pitching to a 3.90 ERA and blasting a memorable home run off the Padres’ James Shields in 2016.
Colon has maintained a determination to pitch in the majors again, citing a desire to surpass Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for most innings thrown by a Dominican-born player. At 3,461 2/3 innings, Colon stands 46 innings shy of Marichal.
On multiple occasions, Colon has also expressed a desire to retire as a Met. Yet the Mets, like all 29 other teams, have been unwilling to take a flyer on the ageless wonder.
