Barcelona join Manchester United in race for Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld

BARCELONA are set to make a serious bid for Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.

Alderweireld, 28, is under contract until 2020 but is stalling on signing fresh terms as he demands wages of around £180,000.

The Daily Mail are claiming Barca boss Ernesto Valverde is tempted to move for the Belgian — who is also wanted by Manchester United — in the summer to bolster his defence.

Tottenham are under no obligation to sell due to Alderweireld's contract but their resolve could be tested as he has a clause which means he can leave for £25million in the summer of 2019.

And Spurs chief Daniel Levy could be tempted to cash in with a bid from a foreign club to keep him out of the clutches of Prem rivals United.

Former Spurs midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has urged the club to give into Alderweireld's demands — or they will lose him to a bigger club.

He said: "I'd give him £180,000. That's what I'd do. I'd give him whatever he wants. If he was at any other club – Man City – they'd pay him and he'd be happy.

"He is one of the best defenders in the world, he could go anywhere right now.
