The 22-year old Hives, who resides just outside Ballarat, received a wildcard entry into the tournament on the back of strong early-season form, defeating highly rated American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the first round.

The result follows the defeat of four Australians on Tuesday after Daria Gavrilova, Ajla Tomljanovic, Sam Stosur and wildcard Destanee Aiava all suffered losses.

Hives' compatriots Ashleigh Barty, Kimberly Birrell and Astra Sharma are all in action later on Wednesday.
