Antonio Conte to replace Julen Lopetegui as Real Madrid boss after Barcelona defeat

The ex-Chelsea manager has been targeted by the Spanish giants to take over from Julen Lopetegui following their El Clasico  5-1 humiliation .

Lopetegui was already on the brink before the clash at the Nou Camp and his players did him no favours as they fell to a third straight LaLiga defeat for the first time since May 2009.

Despite the absence of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez stepped up with a sublime, VAR-assisted hat-trick between Philippe Coutinho’s opener and Arturo Vidal’s header.

The result sees Real Madrid slip to a lowly ninth in La Liga with just four wins in ten league matches in 2018-19 so far.

After SunSport revealed their No1 option to be Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, they have now settled on former Blues boss Conte.

Sergio Ramos has already fired a warning to his soon-to-be new boss though – that he cannot immediately command respect from Real Madrid’s players if he succeeds Lopetegui as manager.

The defender said: “Respect is earned, it is not imposed. Neither a name nor another.

“We have won everything with coaches that you already know, in the end, the management of the players is more important than the technical knowledge of a coach.”

Conte has been out of work since being sacked and swiftly replaced by Maurizio Sarri during the summer.

The decision to sack the under-fire boss would cap a dreadful year for Lopetegui, who was fired by Spain on the eve of the World Cup for taking the Real position.
