Alvaro Morata confirms he is staying at Chelsea after club backed him to be a star this season

Morata had been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after struggling to show his best form following his £58million move from Real Madrid last year.

The 25-year-old struck just 11 Premier League goals in his debut campaign in England and ended up second choice to Olivier Giroud in Antonio Conte's plans.

But after holding heart-to-heart talks with new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and club director Marina Granovskaia, Morata has now committed himself to staying with the Blues.

He told the Mirror: “On the first day of pre-season I spoke to Marina Granovskaia and with the manager and I said: 'I want to stay at Chelsea’.

“They told me: ‘We have a lot of confidence in you and we want you to stay too.’ So everything was perfect.

“The easiest thing would have been to leave Chelsea this year. I could have gone back to Italy. My wife is Italian. It is one hour to her home.

"I could have gone back to Spain, I had a lot of offers. More money.

“But I want to fight. I want to change the past.

“I’d have had low pressure, because I’d already played in Italy and Spain and done good things. But I decided to stay here. I wanted to.

"All the people said I wanted to leave, that I was not happy in London but its not true.

"Now I have taken another house, a bigger one, near to Cobham.

“My wife is very happy. When everyone is talking about the possibility to leave I am here looking for a house.

"So the story is finished and I can't wait for Sunday’s game.”

Morata is hoping to lead the Chelsea attack at Wembley tomorrow in the Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

Having missed out on a place in Spain's World Cup squad, he has benefited from completing a full pre-season with Chelsea and appears content with life.

Off the field his wife has just given birth to twins, and he has changed his squad number from 9 to 29 in recognition of the date they were born.

He is aware he needs to become more clinical this season to silence the critics, but says he would gladly give up personal glory if it meant helping Chelsea reclaim their Premier League title.

He added: "For me I prefer to score 10 goals and take the trophy.

"I want to win the Golden Boot but in England in the last year the Golden Boot winner didn’t take any trophies.”
