Stunning footage reveals the moment the moon ‘swallows’ Saturn

Last month, stargazers around the world were treated to a bizarre astronomical event, during which the moon appeared to swallow Saturn.

The strange event was the result of a lunar occultation, when the moon overlapped with the ringed planet.

While the whole event lasted just under two minutes, one lucky photographer managed to capture footage of the occultation.

Cory Schmitz, a photographer based in Johannesburg, posted the incredible footage on Youtube.

He wrote: “The raw view through my planetary imaging telescope from South Africa of the Saturn conjunction and occultation by Earth's moon.”

In the video, Saturn can be seen approaching the moon, before disappearing behind it.

The ringed planet can then be seen reappearing on the other side of the moon, around 2 hours after the occultation began.
