A wormlike creature was filmed "dancing" on top of a fish lover's posh sushi dinner.
The disturbing clip, shared on Reddit by a stunned diner, inspired hundreds of comments expressing viewers' horror.
The location of the restaurant is not known but Reddit user Lonely Mustard, who uploaded the footage, revealed it was not cheap at £67.
They wrote in the caption: "Bought a $90 sushi platter from the best sushi restaurant in town for dinner with friends.
"This little fella was found dancing on the fish".
One user commented: "I manage a sushi restaurant and this is my worst nightmare."
Another replied: "I eat sushi and this is my worst nightmare."
Many comments left on the social media site questioned why flash freezing was not used by the seafood supplier or chef to kill off any living parasites on it.
But others sympathised with the restaurant, suggesting there is little it can do to prevent the nasty surprise.
"This is a tough one, not much anyone can do about parasites… no ones out there in the ocean worming fish," someone posted.
A Reddit user who claims to work in the fish industry explained how difficult it is to kill off certain parasites.
Mona_Cthulhu said: "As an Icelandic fish factory worker and have been working on a fishing boat I can tell you that freezing those f****** wont kill them.
"In fact me and my buddy tested that by taking one of these worms waited few minutes til they thaw and after few minutes it was more alive than ever so, the only way to kill them is by boiling level.
"Also they plant eggs in the fish so even though you see no worm, you digest the eggs and they will hatch inside of you."
Few_Willingness10411 wrote: "That’s the thing this can happen to the cleanest of restaurants just because their suppliers sent then tainted products"
When advised to let the restaurant owner know about their horrifying surprise the uploader said: "Yeah we’re in contact to get an refund. So far the management are really apologetic and sincere on it."
