Hilarious calendar captures dogs lunging to catch treats in mid-air

If you're stuck for present ideas for a dog-loving friend, a new calendar could make their Christmas.

The Dogs Catching Treats calendar for 2020 has been released, and the photos are just as hilarious as previous editions.

Each month is accompanied by a close-up shot of a dog doing its best to catch a treat in its mouth.

A range of breeds are included – there's a husky with its mouth gaping open, a wide-eyed poodle and a salivating German Shepherd.

  • Hundreds apply to adopt adorable dachshund puppies named after Santa's reindeer

  • Early Christmas for rescue dogs as pooches devour doggie treat gingerbread house

The cover star of the calendar is a stone-faced boxer dog, who was snapped looking unimpressed at the rapid approach of a treat.

The man behind the charming calendar is German photographer Christian Vieler. He's published several calendars of his work as well as a full-length book called 'Treat!'

The Waltrop native has been snapping action shots of dogs since 2013 when he bought a portable flash, technology that allowed him to work with shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000th of a second.

His Labrador retriever Lotte proved the perfect muse.

"To make her move and in order to test the 'freezing options' of the flash, I started throwing treats at her," Mr Vieler told CNN.

"Days later, when I cleaned my hard drive, I noticed how funny the shots were."

He takes most of the portraits at his studio, where he befriends the dogs with treats to make them comfortable before turning on the flash.
