Experts explain whether it’s safe to exercise outside amid coronavirus outbreak

With coronavirus cases in the UK now in their thousands, many Brits have taken the decision to self-isolate in their homes.

If you usually exercise outdoors, you may be getting a little stir-crazy and itching to head outside.

Now, experts have revealed that it’s safe to exercise outdoors – as long as appropriate social distancing methods are maintained.

Speaking to Today, Crystal Watson from the Johns Hopkins Centre for Health Security, explained: “I think it's really important to be able to get our exercise in, even if we can't go to the gym. It’s a wonderful way to keep up mental and physical health.”

If you can, try to exercise in a large outdoor space, rather than a cramped shared garden.

Dr Saad Omer, an expert in infectious diseases at the Yale School of Medicine, advised: “As long as you're going to a non-crowded place … at this point, I would encourage people to do that.

“Social distancing doesn't mean nature distancing. Go out, as long as you have distance."

Dr Omer added that as long as you keep a six-foot distant from other people, running outside is safe.

He said: “We know that there is a radius where droplets settle on surfaces, and people touch them. That is the risk of transmission.

“Outdoors, when you're jogging and moving around, that's a different thing. You're not touching things … For the sake of the community and your own loved ones, it's best to avoid places where you're touching things."
