Wet start to spring with heavy rain on the way next week

It’s going to be a wet and windy start to spring with heavy rain set to hit the country next week.

The downpour will begin in the northwest of Scotland tomorrow, before it moves southeast into England and Wales mid-week.

Today, by contrast, is set to be a cold but sunny Mothering Sunday for Brits with a predicted high of 11 to 12C.

Sub-zero temperatures plunged as low as -4 overnight, meaning parts of the country will be waking up to frost once again.

But dry and sunny conditions mean it’s worth trying to get outside if you can.

Giving the latest forecast, Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates said: “Typically in towns and cities we’re going to be hovering close to the freezing mark.

“It does mean that Sunday will start off fairly chilly for most of us, there will be some frost on the ground certainly.

"But as we move on through the day that strong March sunshine will soon get to work on that, and many of us are set for a lovely day to come with sunshine pretty much across the board by the afternoon.

“The cloud across northern Scotland will be pulling away and with lighter winds in the south in particular compared to Saturday, a high of 11 or 12 degrees will feel quite pleasant, especially if you can get out of what breeze there is.”

Monday will bring similar weather for many Brits and will be dry with plenty of sunshine.

However, this is set to change as a weather front approaches northwest Scotland, bringing clouds and rain which are due to move south as the week progresses.

“At the same time, this weather front approaches northwest Scotland and that will be introducing a change as we move on through the week,” Mr Keates explains.

“So  we’ll see this rain edging its way southeastwards with time, although staying driest for longest across parts of the southeast of England.

“So a bit of a change into the new working week, eventually turning a bit more unsettled.”
