John Humphrys blasts Meghan inviting Oprah to wedding after only ‘one meeting’

John Humphrys has blasted Meghan Markle for inviting Oprah Winfrey to her wedding and then choosing her to do their bombshell interview.

The Mastermind host has previously described himself as an “ardent republican” and has been known to take swipes at the Royal Family previously, even calling for them to end their reign on several occasions.

In a column for the Daily Mail he questioned the motives behind the couple’s Oprah interviews saying that the pair wanted "to free themselves of the Royal Family’s shackles” with their “privacy to be respected” but that the “interview… will be broadcast to hundreds of millions of people around the world… isn't there just the teeniest contradiction here?”

John also argued that the foundations for the interview has already been begun to be set in 2018 with Oprah’s invitation to the Royal Wedding.

He said: “You did manage to squeeze your old friend Oprah onto the invitation list.

“I say 'old friend' but I believe you'd met her only once before the wedding.”

John sarcastically added “how fortunate” Meghan was “to make friends so easily.”

While hosting BBC Radio 4’s Today programme John was very critical on the decision of Harry and Meghan to step down from their royal duties to move to the US for a private life.

In a previous opinion piece for YouGov last year he took aim at Meghan and her reasons for marrying into the Royal Family writing: “At least initially, it was supposed that in marrying him and joining the Royal Family, Meghan Markle fancied a bit of hand-shaking too.

“Why else would she join since that is what they ‘do’?

“Maybe she was misinformed. It would now appear that she thought she could become a duchess and an HRH without having to put on the white gloves.”

He added: “It wasn’t so much that Meghan married into the Royal Family as that Harry married into the family of Hollywood celebrity.”

"You can join the family and spend more time lounging by the pool.”

John has been Mastermind host for the past 18 years and will be stepping down, allowing for Clive Myrie to fill his shoes.
