The queen is well aware of the influence Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have. In fact, she is keeping a close eye on the power royal couple.
Queen Elizabeth recently celebrated her 91st birthday on April 21st and will have her second birthday later this month. Despite having served more than her fair share of time, Her Majesty has no intentions of retiring anytime soon. In fact, she plans to die while still on the throne.
For the queen, her title is much more than a job. As such, she is beyond committed and will do anything within her power to keep everything on track.
Why does Queen Elizabeth take her job so seriously?
Queen Elizabeth has had her seat on the throne since she was 26 years old. Now that she’s the longest reigning monarch in British history with almost 70 years served, her loyal followers believe she’s deserving of a lavish retirement. That’s not in Her Majesty’s cards though — not if she can help it. Despite having a wonderful heir in Prince Charles, she has zero intentions of relinquishing her title.
What keeps the queen clinging to the throne? Nothing other than her beliefs! When she said her oath at Westminster Abbey, she used the words “all the days of my life” when describing her reign. At the time, onlookers probably thought the young queen was just over-enthusiastic, but she meant what she said!

How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle caught the queen’s attention
Earlier this year the queen gave Prince Harry and Meghan Markle permission to separate from Kensington Palace. This meant that the family court that once housed Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Harry would be split. The separation came around the same time the Sussex’s opened their Instagram account. Makes sense considering the account marked their first step to freedom!
But while the queen was quick to allow her grandchildren to split into two separate offices and create their own social media accounts, she drew a line in the sand. After getting permission to leave Kensington Palace, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex requested to leave Buckingham Palace as well. The queen denied them the opportunity without a second thought.
Why does she keep a watchful eye on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?
If Queen Elizabeth II allowed Harry and Meghan to separate from Buckingham Palace, it would have given the couple far too much freedom. Her Majesty knew that allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to “secede” could very well disrupt the legacy she’s tasked with keeping in check. That’s simply something that she will not chance given her commitment to the crown.
“They wanted their household to be entirely independent of Buckingham Palace, but were told no. There is an institutional structure that doesn’t allow that kind of independence. The feeling is that it’s good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of Buckingham Palace, so they can’t just go off and do their own thing.” – Insider (Sunday Times)
Harry and Meghan’s plan was to expand their “Sussex brand” further. By cutting ties with both palaces, they would stand on their own and would have the freedom to pursue any philanthropic causes that they wished without strict rules and regulations holding them down. Their driving force may have been pure, but Queen Elizabeth and her heir Charles felt the change would be more harm than it’s worth. Considering they made the bold bid in the first place, it’s no surprise the matriarch is keeping a watchful eye on the pair.
