Take small steps now and start saving for a rainy day with our top tips

WITH autumn here, it’s the perfect time to start saving for a rainy day.

By taking small steps now, you can soon build up a nice little kitty in case of an emergency — or to splash out on a luxury treat in the future. Follow these steps and start putting money aside now . . .

PAY DAY, PUT AWAY: Set up an automatic transfer on pay day to send a fixed sum of money into a savings account. The money will come out of your current account before you’re even aware it’s there. If you’re a Sun Saver (and you should be!) don’t forget to keep entering the code at the bottom of the page to be one of the 250 winners of £100 every month.

FIND YOUR LIMITS: Keep a track of spending habits and work out where you can cut costs. Maybe ditch the daily coffee, or walk rather than catch the bus and have one less drink on a night out. These little limits can help cut down your monthly spend and leave a little more to stick in the kitty. You can also pop any loose change in jar to boost your savings.

BOOST IT: Loyalty schemes can help you rack up points and offers while you shop. Tesco’s Clubcard vouchers will save you pounds on a big shop in the future — maybe for Christmas. And talking of Christmas, Wilko is currently doing two tubs of Quality Street for £7. Grab them now for the festive season.

HAUL OR NOTHING: If you need to buy gifts for birthdays, special occasions or even Christmas, make a list of everyone you need to cover and set yourself a budget. This way you’ll be more than ready for when Black Friday and any December sales hit.

You can also start stockpiling those little extras. For example, next time you buy something from a beauty counter, ask for free samples — they make fantastic stocking fillers. You can also start adding certain food and drink (look for offers and reduced-to-clear items) to your weekly shop and stash or freeze ready for the festive season.
