Say What?! McDonald's Japan Is Now Selling Carbonara Fries

McDonald’s Japan just gave the chain’s standard fries a major upgrade, and we couldn’t be more jealous. Golden Arches locations in the Asian country began selling carbonara fries on Friday, October 19, and the new menu item delivers a unique twist on the Italian classic.

Known as “Kaketemiyo Carbonara” these burger accompaniments are slathered in a warm carbonara-esque sauce that consists of a three-cheese blend, black pepper and smoked bacon. Basically, it’s a topping one would typically find on pasta carbonara, minus the egg yolk.

Per a press release, Kaketemiyo Carbonara is hardly the first time McDonald’s Japan has ventured into drowning fries in Italian-inspired toppings. In fact, this latest take on the tasty side follows the debut of “Kaketemiyo cheese Bolognese,” which was released in early 2018 and featured fries covered in a meat and cheese concoction not unlike a traditional bolognese sauce.

The release also notes that the carbonara fries are expected to be available for purchase in Japan until late November, and can be ordered on their own or as a side dish for a “little luxurious lunch or dinner.”

And though these fries are not currently available in the United States, they might just have a fan in famous foodie Chrissy Teigen, who has experimented with carbonara in her own right. The star’s latest cookbook, Cravings: Hungry for More, includes a recipe for pad thai carbonara which the Lip Sync Battle cohost was pushed to defend on Twitter after a naysayer slammed it for making Italians cry.

“There is a reason I didn’t call it ‘your Italian mom’s super authentic carbonara from childhood’” Teigen, 32, shot back.
