Ryan Murphy: My 4-Year-Old Son Battled an ‘Often Fatal Pediatric Cancer’

Two years ago, Ryan Murphy’s son Ford was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that almost always affects children.

In an Instagram post, published on Monday, October 22, Murphy revealed that the “abdominal tumor the size of a tennis ball” was discovered by the little boy’s pediatrician, Dr. Lauren Crosby, during a routine checkup. “This sweet little innocent boy with a deep belly laugh and an obsession with Monster Trucks was diagnosed with neuroblastoma . . . an often fatal pediatric cancer,” wrote the American Horror Story creator. “From there, Ford has undergone a huge surgery and several difficult procedures.”

Murphy, 52, leaned on his husband David Miller throughout the painful period in their lives. “My better half, David Miller, was a rock through this — strong and patient and loving (I was always a trembling wreck,” the producer admitted. “Ford was strong as well, and today he is thriving. He just celebrated his fourth birthday, a milestone we are all so thrilled about.”

The mastermind behind Glee then revealed that he and Miller wrote a check in the amount of $10 million to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “We are donating a wing in tribute to Ford and our family is making a gift of $10 million dollars so that other children can experience the love and care of this exceptional facility,” Murphy wrote. “We are so honored and lucky to contribute, and encourage everybody who can to do the same. We love you, Ford.”

Murphy and Miller tied the knot in 2012. They are also parents of 5-year-old son Logan.
