Prepare yourselves for the giant tomato fight that’s coming to London

Spain’s La Tomatina festival is iconic; after all, every year around 40,000 revellers fill the streets of the Valencian town of Buñol, to throw tomatoes at each other.

The event lasts an hour and makes for a pretty spectacular food fight as party-goers get covered in tomatoes, play around in the tomato juice and embrace the event in all of its glory.

And this year, there’s good news for Brits wanting to get involved; it’s coming to the UK.

Sure, it won’t be quite on the same scale, but if you’ve been waiting for the chance to show off your tomato throwing skills, your day has come.

That’s because Spanish restaurant Aqua Nueva is hosting an epic tribute, kicking off with a tomato-inspired menu and cocktail making event. (Including a three-course lunch, and a Ketel One cocktail too).

Then, guests will be invited to don ponchos and head to Downstairs at Carousel in Marylebone where tomatoes will be flying everywhere as you recreate the eye-catching festival.

There will be some rules of course; tomatoes must be smashed before throwing (otherwise, ouch), and you’ll only be allowed to aim below the shoulders.

And of course, revellers are advised not to wear their best clothes. The restaurant suggests wearing old clothes and comfortable shoes which you won’t mind if they get ruined by the tomato juice.

As for your phone? Best not to bring it to the fight, although there will be a designated selfie station if you really can’t hold back on those all-important Instagram snaps.

And for those who are worried about food waste, measures have been taken to keep this limited.

The tomatoes used will be ones from The Tomato Stall which may have otherwise gone to waste anyway; and when the event is over, any leftover tomatoes will be donated to the Veolia and Anaerobic Digestion plant.

The event is taking place from 12.30pm-4pm on Saturday 25th August, ahead of the real festival on the 29th August.

Tickets are £49 and can be booked on DesignMyNight.com .
