Olympic sprinter Iwan Thomas’ son is out of hospital after intensive care ordeal

Olympic sprinter Iwan Thomas has confirmed his son is out of hospital after his intensive care ordeal.

The 44-year-old revealed his son Teddy Ellis Thomas arrived "a little bit early and fast" and was taken to intensive care due to problems with his breathing.

Thomas, from Wales, said he "went home the happiest man alive" only to be told his son had taken ill.

Now, after what he described as an "agonising 10 days", the proud father took to Twitter to reveal his newborn had been allowed home.

He wrote: "After an agonising 10 days I’m delighted that Teddy is now out of hospital, once again thanks for the kind messages, thanks to the brilliant NHS staff at the Princess Anne.

"No doubt my normal randomness will soon resume but expect the odd soppy dad post for the next 18yrs or so."

Previously, Iwan had shared his nightmarish experience as Teddy was admitted to intensive car with "tubes everywhere in an incubator" at Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton.

Posting pictures of the newborn to the photo sharing site, he wrote: "Yesterday was the worst day of my life looking at my everything with tubes everywhere in an incubator.

"He is now beginning to breathe better for himself without full aid of machines, I now know what true unconditional love is."

Pictures show Teddy in an incubator, connected to a breathing device.

Iwan continued: "I’m in bits worried but must say the staff here at Princess Anne hospital Southampton are truly amazing … not out the woods yet but I will keep you all posted…

"Hopefully everything will be fine he just needs a little help as he came into the World a little bit early and fast probably so excited to get here knowing he’s going to have the most fun ever xx.

"His name is Teddy Ellis Thomas and my new best friend.️ mum doing well tired & scared but been amazing #nhs thanks #love #baby."

Iwan’s fellow Olympic athletes rushed to send him messages of goodwill.

Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover, who lost one of her twins while pregnant in April and gave birth to a son in July, commented: "Sending love and strength to you all and your little one."

Rebecca Adlington, an Olympic swimmer, said: "Oh my gosh. He’s gorgeous. Sending so much love and support."

Iwan has been keeping his followers up to date on the pregnancy via Instagram but has remained tight lipped about the identity of his partner.

Since retiring from athletics, the Olympic silver medallist has appeared on a number of reality shows including Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.

The former European and Commonwealth Games 400m champion was awarded an MBE in 1998 for his services to sport.
